THE FRIENDS AND THEIR TREASURE

Once there were two friends in a village named Ram and Raj. They were not only friends but, also partners in their business. They were very successful in their business. Ram was intelligent and hard-working, but raj was very lazy.

Their fame had spread far and wide that they were invited by many businessmen from other kingdoms too. Both the friends travelled to these kingdoms and returned with huge money. They had to be constantly travelling to various kingdoms. So, Ram said to Raj, "Dear Friend, we have earned a huge amount of money.

We have to keep it safe while we are abroad.""That is true Ram. We shall dig a pit under the tree near the temple and go abroad. No one will have the courage to steal from the temple. Our money will be safe till we return," replied Raj. Taking heed of Raj's advice, they dug a pit under the temple tree and left abroad. Ram and Raj returned after a few months and dug the pit to take their money. But, they were shocked to see that their money was missing.

The matter was taken to the Panchayat. There, Ram said, "Revered Panchayat Head, only Raj and myself knew that there was money buried beneath the tree. Now, the money is missing Kindly enquire into the matter and give us justice." Raj said, "I did not steal the money, Milord. The tree will tell witness for me." He then turned and asked the tree, "Oh tree, tell the truth." From inside the tree came a voice, "Milord, it is Ram who is the thief. He has stolen the money himself and is now cheating." The Panchayat people were astonished on hearing the tree speak.

They were about to confirm that Ram was the culprit, Ram took a burning piece of wood and set fire to the half-dried tree. Suddenly, someone came running from inside the hole of the tree trunk. The villagers caught hold of the person and found that to be Raj's father. Now, it was clear that Raj was the real culprit. The Panchayat people confiscated the money from Raj and handed it to Ram, Ram took what was his due share and returned the balance amount to Raj himself. The villagers appreciated Ram's righteous behaviour.
