THE SELFISH FISHERMAN MORAL STORY

In a fishermen village lived Somu, a selfish fisherman. He always wanted to have everything he caught to himself. He never would share his fish with his neighbours and friends. He went to fishing all by himself. His wife was equally boasting in nature. She had the habit of showing off with her neighbours the nice catches of her husband.

Somu went fishing as usual. As he threw the net, he sensed that he had got hold of some big fish. His net was very heavy. He thought to himself, "If someone comes to know of my catch, they would want a share of it. I will pull the net all by myself."

His son was playing nearby. Somu called out, "Hey son, come on." His son came to him. "Go to your mother and ask her to pick a quarrel with the neighbours. Tell her that daddy has got a big catch and will bring home a very big fish." The boy ran home to tell his mother what Somu had asked him to tell.

Somu's wife picked a quarrel with their neighbours. She was expecting her husband to bring home a very big fish.

Meanwhile, Somu pulled the net with all his force. The net did not come out. He pulled still harder. All of a sudden, there was a cracking noise and the net tore away into pieces. Only then did Somu understand that the net had actually got caught in the reefs.

Now Somu had to go home with an empty hand and a torn net. When Somu's wife saw him coming, she ran to him and asked, "Where is the fish, dear? Somu replied, "Sorry dear, the net had got caught in the reefs and tore away.

We will not have fish for some days to come. I have to mend the net, but nobody would help us. I don't know what to do now!"

It would be a full moon day. I should be on penitence and eat only after I can find some saint and offer them food." The next day, the hare was awaiting some saint to pass that way. But, to the hare's despair, no one came that way. In distress, the hare said to himself, "I shall offer myself as food if some saint comes.                 The Forest Deity was watching the entire episode. He appeared in the form of a Brahmin in front of the hare. The hare was happy that his ...

One day, a rabbit was fast asleep under a shady berry tree. Suddenly, the rabbit woke up with a jerk. He thought he heard a loud noise as though the earth is tearing apart. He ran away from the place as fast as his legs could take him. He cautioned all animals he came across. "Hey brothers and sisters, run away from this place.  The earth is tearing apart."
